These intelligent and deeply spiritual poems remind us that there is beauty in this world and that there is a greater good worth striving towards. This is an important collection to read in these disconnected and turbulent times.
The overarching theme of this book is about interconnectedness and devotion to God. There are a lot of biblical terms inferred and referenced. You can tell that the author ponders deeply on the soul. This book is filled with vivid imagery.
The first poem that caught my eye was the piece, “ Thought,†which invigorated my senses with lines such as, “ My heart is a tornado, a beacon†and , “ I am fire, gasping for breathâ€
Joseph is a revealing piece about sibling rivalry, and hit many chords in my heart, as I too, become entombed in sibling rivalry.
The piece, “Ecclesiastes†is a wake-up call to modern society which is thrown to the lions of vanity. In this biblical-esque piece, Pickering nails at the institutions of ego-driven mania which plague us.
“Jesus is One Through All†hit me deeply, as there are many religions, faiths, paths, etc. and this poem is a refreshing reminder that no one true religion is superior, and that however or whatever you Call God, source, etc, they all lead to the same truths. The interconnectedness of the soul sings with vibrancy, which is thrown onto the plate of the religion argument in this poem.
“Grief†shows Pickering’s vulnerability and speaks of the human spirit of loneliness and all of its woes. Grief and loneliness often go hand in hand, as grief often pushes us away from others or makes us feel isolated, even in full rooms.
“Obligation†is a very human poem; embedded in spiritual light. Myself, a poet and author, often wonder if I inspire others with my works, and this poem, like many others in the book, asks questions that I think most people ask themselves often.
“Salt and Sorrow,†by Dustin Pickering, left me seeking answers to questions as well as left me ruminating to the why’s and how’s of such complexities as the human soul and spirit.
This latest tome by Dusting Pickering was a sequence of prophecies, methinks. I felt privileged to share this experience with Mr. Pickering as I watched him create a masterful manifestation out of the genius of his mind. I always noticed a biblical theme in his work and I sense it speaks to him on a more universal level than the exclusivity of religion, itself. His ink children are not to be taken lightly.
I was truly blown away by Dustin Pickering's new book "Salt and Sorrow." This book is DEEP. It is one of the best books of poetry I have read in a long time. As soon as I finished reading it, I immediately began reading it again. As I said, this book delves DEEP into the human spirit but especially into Pickering's human spirit as he questions certain aspects of his own faith in which he finds both certainty and uncertainty. Right off the bat, in the poem "What Once" Pickering writes, "I go to war with all that is good inside me." These poems are deeply thoughtful, as in the appropriately-named poem "Thought" Pickering writes, "still, I hunger for the emptiness or the fullness, the satisfaction of continual surges of emotion." This book also gives one a lot to think about concerning their own spirituality as well. It is beautifully written with lines and images that will literally take your breath away. Each poem provokes much thought as one gets to see Pickering searching for the meaning of his spirituality and causes the reader to begin questioning their own spiritual side a bit more. In my opinion this is the best book Pickering has ever written, in that one can continually come back to this book and find a new way of looking at the spiritual side of this world. Anyone who enjoys poems that make you think will love this book.
