Supernatural creatures swarm the earth, and humanity is on the brink of extinction. Stalked by a handsome fairy who claims she is like him, demonkind, Rae Wilder thinks maybe it was a mistake breaking the rules by going over the Wall into demon territory.

Plunged into a world of dark magics, fierce creatures, and ritual sacrifice, she is charged with a guarding a magical amulet. The changes to her mind and body are startling, but rather than accept her purpose she struggles against who she is destined to be. Throw in a big lust for a vampire who can't keep his hands off her, and life starts to get complicated.

Rae is forced to make the ultimate choice to live and die human, or embrace her birth-right and wield magics that could turn her into something wicked, a force of nature nothing can control.

I don’t particularly like giving bad reviews. I can overlook spelling and grammatical errors. I can even overlook the inconsistency of the characters’ diction. But, Glamour by Penelope Fischer was seriously disappointing. The book had so much potential and why not? It’s a paranormal romance combined with dystopian elements.
After the ‘surge’, humans lived in walled-off communities, protecting them from demons. Demons in this novel consist of the fae, vampires, and shifters. (It could consist of more, but these are the only ones introduced in this novel.) Rae Wilder, the heroine of this book, goes outside the wall to discover she is something more than human.
The synopsis of the book states that Rae has to make the ‘ultimate choice’, to die human or to embrace her true nature. So, you’re thinking it’s going to be a great struggle. No. Rae embraces that she’s a demon rather immediately. It’s really a rather anticlimactic moment.
Here’s my main problem with this book. It felt rushed. You didn’t have a chance to get to know or even like the character before the first plot twist. Then there’s the romantic tryst between Rae, Breandan (fae), and Tomas (vampire). Other than the fact that we know what they are and that both of them want something from her, there really isn’t any character development.
Glamour was rushed to the point that you never get a feel for Rae’s intentions. During the first encounter with Breandan, Rae says she doesn’t like him. Which, quite frankly is understandable. One of the first things Mr. Caveman says is ‘you are mine.’ That would potentially rub me the wrong way, as well. However, during their next encounter, which is only a few hours later, they are frolicking through the woods together. Somehow Rae was able to magically produce these feeling for him, without any substantial interaction. Then there’s Tomas. Her first encounter with him she describes him as very unattractive. A few hours later, they are locked in a lover’s embrace.
This read like a B movie – with a questionable screenwriter and bad acting. It was definitely cringe worthy at times. I gave Glamour two stars because it definitely has potential, if Fischer were to expand on the novel and hire an editor.

Glamour Rae Wilder Book 1 eBook Penelope Fletcher Reviews

This book was 100% what I expected based on the reviews I read. I grabbed it because it was free, and it kept popping up while I was looking at various urban fantasy lists on and GoodReads.

There were lots of great ideas in this book, and I loved the unique landscape painted in my head. I don't know if the author intended, but I pictured much of the book set in this gray concrete desolation with flashes of intense color from the characters and certain settings. The visual style is almost comic-book or cartoon, but not quite.

I read the new version that came out in April 2012, so according to the author the writing has been polished. It was very readable, although at times I was confused about who was talking or exactly what was going on in the action. Certain aspects of events seemed disjointed, slightly off. Other than that, no problems with the prose.

Some of the readers complained that they simply hated the main character, Rae. This might have been cleaned up in the revisions, because I liked her fine. But I didn't love her. In terms of capturing the personality of a mythological creature, especially a fairy, the author arguably does an excellent job. Rae is fiery, impulsive, confusing, and indecisive. And not always all that bright. She is not human, and therefore does not act human. Perhaps we shouldn't love her.

It is incredibly fast-paced. Perhaps too fast paced. We never really get a chance to stop and heal (as readers), it's just right on to the next conflict.

This is the kind of book that I could almost love, if not for its little flaws. If you like urban fantasy and fairies, this book will not be a waste of time.
So this whole book takes place in one day. One day! Does Rae even get to sleep. I did not enjoy this book. Some simple basic spoilers I guess from this point but not detailed!

Rae starts out as a girl learning to fight demons in a walled in enclosure where all humans live now. She goes out for a run learns she is a fairy, kisses a random boy runs, gets in trouble, goes back to the enclosure, finds a vampire, feels something for an ugly vampire after she just kissed said boy two seconds ago. Gets into a fight with a different boy, original boy comes to save her, more running and stuff get into another fight back at enclosure kills someone makes out with ugly vampire next to dead body, first boy the love of her life comes back. Yeah i mean that is pretty much the whole book, I mean there is more details some other little things but I mean come on.
Space out the day, stop having Rae so wishy washy. Pick a thing. Maybe I'm just super sick of the love triangle thing but I mean I'm kind of over this. So much happened in one day!!!
I don't know I'm just over it, it made me angry for some stupid reason. Too much too soon? I don't know. And now I'm rambling, good luck.
